Since it’s very easy to get sidetracked by the daily hustle of our lives, it’s very important to keep the goals PRESENT. A visual reminder of your goal might help. Whether it’s a picture of what you wish to accomplish this year, or a few motivating words you put on your mirror so you can look at it every morning, keeping your goals PRESENT is key. Remember, seeing what you want to achieve is a great daily reminder of what you are aiming for. It’s very easy for children to forget what their goals are especially when they are struggling with skills in the gym. Keep them motivated and remind them that they will achieve their goal if they keep pushing through.
Preschool Parents:
For preschool children goals are simple. Participation, class engagement staying in line in class, being nice to their class mates and listening to their coaches are the most important behaviors to aim for. Once children master the basics of a new learning environment, gymnastics fundamentals can be taught. The main focus for the littlest in the gym is gross motor development, which improves cognitive skills. In fact, early gross motor development fosters reading at a young age. Keeping learning fun and physical is out goal for your child.
Recreational Parents:
For a gymnast in recreational classes, goals are moving up to the next level and mastering a skill. They may have role models that are in the gym and on team, or they may have a role models that are famous. If their role model is in the gym let them stay some nights and watch them practice. This will help keep them motivated and it gives them a visual of who they want to become.
Team Parents:
Every team gymnast has an idol. Every idol has a story. Whoever is the idol in your child’s eyes is their motivation. Remind your gymnast of all the trials and tribulation their idol went through. Show your child videos of their idol to keep them motivated and inspired. You may also try visuals such as pictures and motivational words on their bathroom mirror to keep them inspired daily.
